Philosophically speaking- what's the purpose of education?

I actually have to write a debate case about this, and I was thinking of taking the philosophical standpoint. I have to prove that fine arts should have greater value then athletics in secondary schools, and I was thinking of using a philosopher's "purpose of education" and then proving that fine arts achieve this better. Help?
